Gent , October 2002. Jeff Rona is in the grand jury for the International Filmfestival in Gent , Belgium . Apart from that, he is also a guest speaker at two seminars about filmmusic. Mr. Rona and I met in the lobby of a five-star hotel in the center of the city. A little tired from talking at the seminars, Jeff leans back on the comfortable couch. Utterly relaxed and completely frank he talks about his departure from Media Ventures and about his recent music.

Not that the orchestral score is being threatened with extinction, still, electronic instruments are becoming more and more important in the composing and performing of original filmmusic. Think of David Arnold or Graeme Revell or Craig Armstrong. Think of Jeff Rona, the Media Ventures composer who has scored the Ridley Scott epic White Squall and the popular television show Chicago Hope . “Sometimes it’s okay to let a sound be normal, but usually I look for a way to turn the obvious into something abstract”, says Jeff Rona.

Every year in october the Flanders International Filmfestival takes place. This festival pays much attention to the arts and crafts of filmmusic. Each year there is a concert and occasionally there is a seminar. In 1999 Elliot Goldenthal was present at a concert of his own music. In 2000 the composer returned to attend the Hans Zimmer concert, to perform as a guest speaker at a composers workshop and, together with his wife Julie Taymor, to present her film Titus .
